Happy holidays from CASE. We hope you are having an enjoyable holiday season with friends, family, and loved ones. As we close 2017, we look back on what has been an eventful year. Our significant achievements in 2017 include CASE’s first all-electronic board election, legislative victories (www.calattorneys.org/public-info), and increasing our number of local reps to improve service to our members in what has been, at times, a difficult political climate.
One of the many ways we are preparing for 2018 and our future is by launching our CASE Membership Drive. The goal of the membership drive is to strengthen our union by providing increased communication and effective representation to our members. To make our union stronger we need more Voting Members lending us their voice. With more active members, not only will we strengthen our bargaining power, but we can receive more feedback and represent you more effectively.
It is important to be proactive about increasing our membership now, due to the Janus litigation expected to pass in the U.S. Supreme Court this term. If Janus prevails, fair-share fees which cover representation and collective-bargaining costs will be eliminated. Consequently, unions across the nation will become defunded through an effort anti-union advocates call “Right-to-Work” (RTW).
States that already have RTW laws on their books have experienced union membership drop by about 2.1%, with some unions experiencing even larger decreases. Wages are 12.7% lower in RTW states (epi.org/publication/right-to-work-states-have-lower-wages/) due to the loss in bargaining power. In stark contrast, our union has obtained significant wage increases this contract with a 5% increase last year, an additional 5% that you received in July, and another 4% raise in 2018.
It’s time to save America’s unions and CASE by fighting for our bargaining power and collective-bargaining rights as legal professionals. We must stand together on this issue if we are to prevail. We invite your feedback and suggestions as we move forward on this journey to improve our union and represent you better. The first step on that journey is to join us by becoming a Voting Member. To sign up, please fill out the attached form (click on link) and email it back to us at CASE@calattorneys.org.
To add to the benefit of becoming a Voting Member, and to encourage you to ask other members to join, we have created an incentive program with custom CASE rewards to show off your union pride and referral efforts.
