Local and Specialty Bar Dues. By CASE Member Jessi Fierro. As a proud CASE member and long-time member of the California Lawyers Association (CLA) – a voluntary bar association serving California attorneys – I want to remind CASE members that under our MOU section 12.8(D), our state employers are to reimburse Bargaining Unit 2 members for dues of up to $200 for local or specialty bar associations like CLA. Government attorneys can join CLA and one “section” for $100 (https://calawyers.org/gov-pricing/). CLA sections that could be helpful to state attorneys include criminal law, environmental law, labor and employment, litigation, tax law, public law, and more.
State attorneys and the agencies we serve greatly benefit from the content, service, and community that associations like CLA provide. In my own CLA membership, I learn a lot from Environmental Law Section publications and conferences, I am proud of my section’s active support of law students, and I sincerely enjoy the opportunities I’ve had to interact with a community of amazing lawyers beyond my agency. I met my current boss through CLA long before I applied for a state attorney job. Now, I spread the word about my agency’s vacancies through the larger CLA network. As I’ve gotten more involved in my section and various committees, CLA has provided me great leadership opportunities. If you have any questions about the benefits of CLA membership for state attorneys, feel free to contact me at jessica.e.h.fierro@gmail.com. Ask your agency office about their process for adding CLA membership when your annual bar dues are paid (it’s easy to do both at the same time, with just a check box on your regular bar renewal).

MOU Suggestion Box. With the next round bargaining around the corner, it is never too soon to collect ideas for negotiations. You have access to our MOU Suggestion Box, a place for members – and ONLY members – to contribute ideas for new or improved benefits and MOU terms at any time. We are, of course, aware of the need for the Governor to address continuing salary lags (both within the unit and between state service and local government jobs), so we are hoping to collect your ideas on non-salary MOU items. To complete a suggestion card, click here. (password: membersmatter22).
