BU2 Benefit: Local and Specialty Bar Dues. By: Jessi Fierro
As a proud CASE member and long-time member of the California Lawyers Association (CLA) – a voluntary bar association serving California attorneys – I want to remind CASE members that under our MOU section 12.8(D), our state employers are to reimburse Bargaining Unit 2 members for dues of up to $200 for local or specialty bar associations like CLA. Government attorneys can join CLA and one “section” for $100 (https://calawyers.org/gov-pricing/). CLA sections that could be helpful to state attorneys include criminal law, environmental law, labor and employment, litigation, tax law, public law, and more.
State attorneys and the agencies we serve greatly benefit from the content, service, and community that associations like CLA provide. In my own CLA membership, I learn a lot from Environmental Law Section publications and conferences, I am proud of my section’s active support of law students, and I sincerely enjoy the opportunities I’ve had to interact with a community of amazing lawyers beyond my agency. I met my current boss through CLA long before I applied for a state attorney job. Now, I spread the word about my agency’s vacancies through the larger CLA network. As I’ve gotten more involved in my section and various committees, CLA has provided me great leadership opportunities. If you have any questions about the benefits of CLA membership for state attorneys, feel free to contact me at jessica.e.h.fierro@gmail.com. Ask your agency office about their process for adding CLA membership when your annual bar dues are paid (it’s easy to do both at the same time, with just a check box on your regular bar renewal).
Hiring Above Minimum. As we last reported, CalHR has updated the Human Resources Manual. Section 1707.Hiring Above Minimum (HAM) which reflects the elimination of the delegated authority to provide HAM rates on an individual basis. As part of these revisions, any current employee already in the classification will be eligible for the authorized rate if they are currently below the rate specified. Receiving a HAM rate will reset the employee’s anniversary date as specified in Section 5. CASE has received feedback from members that Section 5, which has reset some of the employee’s anniversary dates may have in particular instances resulted in delaying an MSA and therefore not resulting in a true benefit to certain employees. CASE has requested to meet with CalHR over this matter to determine how many employees have been negatively impacted and what options may be available.
CASE’s Privacy Protection Benefit is Free – Permanently! CASE has negotiated a deal with OneRep to make their privacy protection benefit free for all CASE members permanently. If you are interested in joining, contact info@calattorneys.org.
REMINDERS:
MOU Suggestion Box. While we are still a few months away from the next round of bargaining, it’s never too soon to collect ideas for future negotiations. You have access to our MOU Suggestion Box, a place for members – and ONLY members – to contribute ideas for new or improved benefits and MOU terms at any time. We are, of course, aware of the need for the Governor to address continuing salary lags (both within the unit and between state service and local government jobs), so we are hoping to collect your ideas on non-salary MOU items.
