New Member Benefit: OneRep. As part of CASE’s commitment to providing the most value for your membership, CASE is now offering an online privacy protection benefit for our members. The company CASE has hired to manage this new benefit is OneRep, a company that scrubs users’ private information from over 190 online search engines. OneRep is offering CASE members this service for just $20 per year. And, if you decide that OneRep’s services would be of benefit to your entire family, OneRep offers a family plan for an additional fee. You should have received an invitation from One Rep on September 9 to sign up for their privacy protection program. More information about OneRep can be found here.
Local & Specialty Bar Association Dues. The CASE MOU provides reimbursement for memberships in job-related bar associations, or for job-related specialty sections of the State or a local bar, if State bar membership is required as a condition of employment. The total amount for which employees shall be reimbursed shall not exceed $200 annually for all job-related bar associations, specialty sections, and local bar memberships. Local or specialty bar dues for employees who work less than full-time and for employees who work less than a full year preceding when bar dues must be paid may be prorated. Departments that do not directly pay local or specialty bar dues may require proof of payment by employees requesting reimbursement. For more details, check out the CalHR Manual section on dues payment, or contact CASE.
Contracting Out for Legal Services. Is your department contracting out legal services that you would like CASE to review and challenge? When departments contract out for legal services, they are required to provide notice to CASE. However, there are times that departments fail to notify CASE. If you become aware of your department contracting out for legal services for work that should be done in-house by you and your colleagues, please let CASE know by sending an email to outsidelegalcounsel@calattorneys.org.
Have You Looked At Your Official Personnel File Lately? Under Section 13.5 of the Unit 2 MOU, you have a right to review your Official Personnel File (OPF). Departments keep their employees’ OPFs at their headquarters’ location. It is imperative that members review or request a certified copy of their OPF once every few years. This is especially important if you are looking to promote or transfer. When transferring to a different department, the new department will require an employee to sign a waiver so that the department may review the employee’s OPF. Even though it does not happen often, there can be items in the OPF that an employee was not aware of or there may be something missing from the OPF. Simply contact your HR Department and ask to see your OPF.
NDI v ENDI. Did you know? If you have sick leave and vacation, should you become injured or ill (not due to work) and unable to work you would be eligible Non-Industrial Disability Insurance (NDI). This pays $135 per week. You cannot use your leave credits to supplement. There is also no disability payment available to you should you need to take time off for baby bonding time or to care for a family member.
Did you know that if you have annual leave (AL) that the disability benefits are better? Under AL, if you become ill or injured and unable to work, you would be eligible for Enhanced Non-Industrial Disability Insurance (ENDI) which pays you 50% of your salary. You can also use leave credit (if available) to supplement up to 75% or 100% of your pay. AL also makes you eligible for NDI- Family Care Leave (FCL) which gives you a disability payment for baby bonding time or to take time off to care for a family.
Interested in switching? You can do so once every 24 months by submitting this form https://www.calhr.ca.gov/Documents/calhr-875.pdf to your department.
If you would like to discuss the differences between sick/vacation and annual leave further, please contact CASE at info@calattorneys.org to schedule a meeting.

MOU Suggestion Box. While we are a year away from the next round of bargaining, it’s never too soon to collect ideas for future negotiations. You have access to our MOU Suggestion Box, a place for members – and ONLY members – to contribute ideas for new or improved benefits and MOU terms at any time. We are, of course, aware of the need for the Governor to address continuing salary lags (both within the unit and between state service and local government jobs), so we are hoping to collect your ideas on non-salary MOU items.
